How to set up Andronautic’s events, attributes, and tags in Google Tag Manager using a template we provide.
The configuration file
To avoid having to manually configure these events and their attributes in Google Tag Manager, we can provide you with a configuration file in JSON format (called gtm-andronautic.json) that will let you create a container to measure user navigation and conversion. This base configuration currently supports the following platforms (external to Andronautic):
- Google Analytics.
- Google Ads.
- Meta Pixel.
This file is used solely to configure Google Tag Manager, meaning it does not include the configuration of Google Analytics, Google Ads, etc. To obtain this gtm-andronautic.json file, please contact our support team.
How to import the container
Once you have received the file, follow these steps to import the container:
- Log in to the Google Tag Manager home page with your credentials.
- Click the Create Account button and fill out the form with the appropriate values to create a Web container.
- Go to the Admin menu option and click Import Container.
- On the screen that appears, do the following:
- Choose the
gtm-andronautic.jsonfile using the file selector. - Click the New button to load this configuration into a new workspace. Give it a name and, optionally, a description.
- Select the Overwrite import option (default value).
- Click the Confirm button.
- Choose the
Tags active after import
Now, in addition to several triggers and numerous variables, you should see the following tags active:
| Type | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion Linker | Conversion Linker | Campaign tracking |
| Google Tag | GA4 - config | Initialization of the Google Analytics container |
| Google Analytics: GA4 Event | GA4 - event - add_payment_info | Adding payment details during the checkout process |
| Google Analytics: GA4 Event | GA4 - event - add_to_cart | Adding a product to the shopping cart |
| Google Analytics: GA4 Event | GA4 - event - begin_checkout | Start of the checkout process |
| Google Analytics: GA4 Event | GA4 - event - contact | Tracking of information requests |
| Google Analytics: GA4 Event | GA4 - event - page_view | Tracking of page visits |
| Google Analytics: GA4 Event | GA4 - event - prepurchase | Tracking of purchases |
| Google Analytics: GA4 Event | GA4 - event - purchase | Tracking of paid purchases |
| Google Analytics: GA4 Event | GA4 - event - select_item | Tracking of clicks on a product in a listing |
| Google Analytics: GA4 Event | GA4 - event - view_item | Tracking of views of a product’s detail page |
| Google Analytics: GA4 Event | GA4 - event - view_item_list | Tracking of views of a product within a listing |
The rest of the tags, of the Cookiebot CMP, Google Ads Conversion Tracking, Google Ads Remarketing, and Facebook Pixel types, are paused.
Prerequisites
To start using this configuration, you need to have already set up:
- An ecommerce property in Google Analytics 4, linked to your website, with a data stream (Data collection and modifications: Data streams) and having configured your payment gateways in the unwanted referrals exclusion list (Data collection and modifications: Data streams: Web stream details: Configure tag settings: List unwanted referrals).
- Optionally, a Meta account, with one or more campaigns, at least one pixel, and at least one custom conversion event.
- Optionally, a Google Ads account, with one or more campaigns and at least one pixel for each conversion to be measured.
- Optionally, a Cookiebot CMP account (if you are not using Andronautic’s native option).
Note: the imported configuration includes enhanced conversions configuration on the ecommerce events.
Variables to configure
To adapt the imported configuration in the container to your website, you need to edit the values of the following variables, depending on which tools you want to link with Google Tag Manager:
| Name | Tool | Description |
|---|---|---|
| ct - Cookiebot_id | Cookiebot | Domain group identifier |
| ct - Facebook_id | Meta Pixel | Tracking pixel identifier |
| ct - GA4_id | Google Analytics 4 | Property’s data stream identifier |
| ct - GAds_id | Google Ads | Tracking pixel identifier |
| ct - GAds_conversion_id | Google Ads | Conversion pixel identifier for the ecommerce event |
Final steps
Back on the main screen, do the following:
- Review the trigger and tag configuration, adapting it to your needs.
- Validate the changes in this workspace’s container using the Preview option found in the top right corner.
- Pause any tags you are not going to use (e.g., if you don’t use Cookiebot, leave the Cookiebot CMP tag paused).
- Publish the changes to the container by clicking the Submit button found in the top right corner.
The tag, trigger, and variable configuration of the new container may change over time, so it is recommended that you check this page from time to time to see if there is a new version of the base container’s configuration file.
Cookie consent and tag activation
Currently, the Google Tag Manager container we provide uses the cookie_consent_marketing event to activate both the navigation and ecommerce tags. This event is triggered when the visitor allows the use of marketing-group cookies when visiting the website, via the classic banner. This conservative choice, which legally covers Andronautic’s clients, is due to the fact that we cannot know which tools each client connects to that container.
