Custom 404 error page

404 errors, or page not found errors, are part of the World Wide Web. Eventually, whether due to human or programming error, or because a visitor mistypes a path, both the website itself and search engines will offer users links to resources that no longer exist.

A custom 404 error page can considerably improve the user experience on any website, especially e-commerce sites, since it can be used to:

• Show visitors a friendly message, styled to match the website.
• Offer visitors alternatives, such as returning to the homepage or going to the list of products and services.

How to customize the content of the 404 page

To customize this page, you use the usual content editor, which you can access by following these steps:

1. Log in to your control panel with your administrator user credentials.
2. In the Administration panel, go to Popeye Resources › Site Customization. There you’ll need to enable the Custom page 404 checkbox and click Save (bottom right).
3. Go to a path you know doesn’t exist, for example midominio.com/es/barcos/la-dorada.
4. Click the blue Editar button found at the top right.
5. Use the content structure menu in the top right corner to add text and/or images, in Body_404.

How to change the tab title

The title of the 404 error page (the one shown in the browser tab) must be changed from the website’s control panel. Follow these steps to modify it:

1. Go to Popeye Resources: Custom messages (or Custom messages).
2. For each language, scroll down until you find the Errors section and click Show.
3. Type the text string you want as the page title in the Title tag error 404 field and save your changes.

List of logged 404 errors

There’s also the option to view a list of 404 errors that have occurred on the website. To do this, go to the control panel’s Errores 404 menu option. The list includes the date, language, and path of the error, and lets you filter by these three fields.
